Abstract

RIZQON AZIIARI: TRANSLATION METHOD OF A BILINGUAL BOOK'WHA'T I\[Y MOTHER DOESN'T KNOW' BY SOIIYA SONES A problem comes when we cannot understand the content of a book that is written in the foreign language. In lndonesia, there are few people understand the text written in English well and also there few books that have been translated in Indonesian because of the problem, Indonesia is still lack of information. That is why, since few years ago lot of books as product of translation popped out. And the book's content not only about science or technology, but also popular books such as religion, biography, novel, and magazine. Even in order to make Indonesian more able to understand foreign language, particularly Englisfu some publishers publish books andmagazines in bilingual edition. In doing all that, the researcher takes qualitative research to research such book, and the researcher takes What My Mother Doesn't Know by Sonya Sones as participant of this research and also as data and source data of this research. The instruments of this research are by observation and documentation. The technique of analysis data is the theory of franslation itself. After the researcher did the researcll finally the researcher got the conclusion that based on data above; it was proven that there was application of semantic translation and also there were so many cases of meaning shifts in What My Mother Doesn't Know by Sonya Sones. Meaning shifts that the researcher found in the data occurred from general to specific meaning, shiftq from specific to general meaning, shifu caused by socio-cultural aspects, level shifts, ffid category shifu. Most of meaning shifts occurred in phrase level, followed by clause or sentence level, and the last in word level as the result of situations that must faced by the translator to translate those expressive components into the target language so that the text will be acceptable and easily understood by the readers. In that process, meanings shifts are unavoidable. The researcher also suggest to all writer to insert the definitions of diffrcult words so the translator and the reader will get benefit from that. And for the publishers, the researcher suggests to print the translation work in bilingual format, if it is possible, so that the readers can learn so many things about translation and meaning.
