Abstract

Desi Nurjannahtillah : The Influence of Parents’ Educational Background on the Student’s Ability in Speaking at Eight Year Students’ of SMP Muhammadiyah Karangampel In the process of teaching and learning English as a foreign language, there are some factors that influence of it. Generally, it can be concluded in three factors, internal factor, external factor and approach learning. The internal factor comes from the students themselve and the external factor comes out of the student such as family, environment, home, etc. one of the external factor is family. Family has an important role for the educational of their children. Parent‟s educational background is one of the indicators of family. Parents‟ educational background is relevant with student ability. The aims of research from this thesis are to find out the data about the student‟s parents educational background, the student‟s ability in speaking and how far the influence of parents educational background on the students ability in speaking at eight year of SMP Muhammadiyah Karangampel. The research is based on the quantitative data. By getting the data resource with 109 student‟s population, and 50 students as the research sample. The techniques of data collection which are used by means of average mark and correlation product moment. The technique of collecting data applied by the writer are interview, questionnaire and test. After the data have been analyzed, it showed that the parents‟ educational background has average mark namely 29.7, student‟s ability in speaking is 29.8, it means that the correlation between variable X (parent‟s educational background) and variable Y (student‟s ability in speaking) is 0.745. It‟s categorized by enough correlation. It means that the parent‟s educational background has enough influence on the student‟s ability in speaking. After the analysis this research the writer has suggestion that, parents‟ educational background is one of factor that can influence student‟s ability. But as good parents‟, whatever kind of education that have been taken, should give the support, motivation, attention the children‟s education and behavior.
