Abstract

FARHATUNNISA : The Correlation Between The Application of The Audio Lingual Method (ALM) and The Students English Speaking Ability at The First Year Students of SMPN 3 Jatibarang Kabupaten Indramayu In English language, there are many factors of skills to be mastered such as: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Those are taught in English teacing. Language in human beings’ life is very crucial. They use language to express their feelings, ideas, and opinion to the others. Without language, they cannot communicate and increase their living standard. The students of junior high schooll just learn English without using speak English well. The main problem in this research, the students’ weakness in their ability such as expression accurate and appropriate. Audio Lingual Method (ALM) is teaching method that use of a language laboratory, i.e.; tape-recorder, TV, picture, and etc. In the Audio Lingual Method (ALM) language learners are equipped with the knowledge and skill required for effective communication in a foreign language. Meanwhile that speaking is to express or communicate opinions, feelings, ideas, etc, by or as talking and it involves the activities in the part of the speaker as psychological, psychological (articulator) and physical (acoustic) stages. In speaking, the students also study about pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and fluency. In this research the writer used quantitative method, one of types of quantitative method is experimental research. The techniques of collecting data used by the writer are observation, interview, test, and questionnaire. The data which have been collected are analyzed by used the formula of product moment. In this research the writer take VII-A class of the students who become respondents as sample consist of 30 students. The technique is used taking sample by using cluster sample, because this class is favorite class among the others of seventh year. The aims of the research in writing this thesis are; to know the data about the students response of the application of the Audio Lingual Method (ALM), to know the data about the students in speaking ability, to know the data about positive and significant correlation of the application of the Audio Lingual Method (ALM) and the students English speaking ability. SMPN 3 Jatibarang Kabupaten Indramayu is one of junior high scholl near from my house. It’s located at JL. Mayor Dasuki No.209 Kecamatan Jatibarang Kabupaten Indramayu 45273. After the research, have been found out and analyzed, that the average score of the students response of the Audio Lingual Method is 82.07. And the average of the students English speaking ability is 78.87. Taking point view from the result of the value “r” product moment that is 0.43. After knowing the degree of freedom the writer can not find such as df of 28 which has level significance 5% become 0.36, and level of significant 1% becomes 0.46. Because rxy or observation (ro) at standard significance 5% is higher than rt (0.43 > 0.36), so that this level significance 5% Null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and Alternative Hypothesis (Ho) is approved or accepted.
