Abstract
SITI KHOLIFAH: THE INFLUENCE OF STUDENT TEAMS ACHIEVEMENT DIVISION (STAD) IN IMPROVING STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION ACHIEVEMENT AT THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 3 PALIMANAN Students have problem in studying English especially in reading, they less in reading. The students‘ difficulties are caused that they always get the new words and also sentence structures in reading text. The students‘ weakness in reading comprehension and the teacher difficulties in teaching are becoming the interest for the writer to do research. The writer chooses one of model of cooperative learning that is Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD). Robert Slavin and his colleagues in John Hopkins University developed STAD teaching. Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) is a cooperative learning strategy in which small groups of learners with different levels of ability work together to accomplish learning goal. If students study reading through cooperative learning the students will improve their reading achievement. The writer uses a quantitative approach through t-test one group design. X variable is the students‘ reading comprehension achievement before using Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) and Y variable is the students‘ reading comprehension achievement after using Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD). The techniques of collecting data are observation, interview and test. The population of this study is the second year students of SMP N 3 Palimanan. The writer uses Second Year students exactly class VIII D for experiment class and it is consist of 40 students. The writer also uses class VIII H for try out class. SMPN 3 Palimanan was established on July 1986 and it located at Lungbenda village Palimanan-Cirebon. The average score of pre test is 56. 75 and post test is 71. The result of the study shows that students‘ achievement after the use of STAD is better than before the use of STAD. And to know whether there is significant influence of using STAD on the students‘ reading comprehension achievement the writer uses t-test formula. The result of t-test is 9. 44 and t-table is 2. 023. Then t-test and t-table are compared. The data shows that t-test is higher than t-table. It means that there is significant difference between the result of pre test and post test. It can be said that the use of STAD has significant influence on the students‘ reading comprehension achievement. The data findings prove that the use of STAD showing improvement in students‘ reading comprehension achievement. It means STAD is effective in improving students‘ reading comprehension achievement.
