Abstract

There are many problems faced in learning English, especially in speaking skills, which are often caused by a lack of confidence, fear of being wrong, and lack of practice. Whereas speaking ability is a very important ability. Therefore, this research discuss about how students can improve their speaking skills independently with the help of technology. This research offers an English learning media that can help improve students' speaking skills. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effectiveness of Cake application in improving speaking skills of grade IX students at MTs N 3 Cirebon. The research method used was a quasi-experiment design with a quantitative approach. The populations of this study were all 9th grade students of MTs N 3 Cirebon. The sample of this study consisted of two classes: class IX.C as the experimental class that used Cake application and class IX.A as the control class that did not use Cake application. This study used pre-test and post-test instruments to measure students' speaking ability before and after treatment. The collected data were analyzed by using SPSS 26 statistical test to see the significant difference between the two groups. The results of this study showed that students involved in the experimental class showed greater improvement in speaking skills compared to students in the control class. It can be seen from the average pre-test and post-test experiment. Where the average pre-test experiment is 71.38 and the average post-test experiment is 80.63, so there is an increase in pre-test scores to post-test scores. The effectiveness of using Cake Application can be seen from the significancy of the t-test results sig. 2 tailed of this research is 0.000. Its mean 0.000 < 0.05. The N-Gain score of the pre-test and post-test of the experimental class is 63.8%. It shows that using Cake Application is effective to improve students‘ speaking skill in the students of ninth grade students at MTs N 3 Cirebon. The English teacher can use Cake Application as the alternative media to improve students‘ speaking skill. Keywords: Cake Application, Speaking skill, Students
