Abstract

This study investigates the extent to which students of the English Language Teaching Department (ELTD) at UIN Syekh Nurjati Cirebon utilize and understand basic idiomatic expressions in their academic writing, as well as the types of idiomatic errors they commonly produce. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through interviews with three students and analysis of 27 student writing samples. The findings reveal that students often acquire idiomatic expressions incidentally, primarily through digital media and informal communication, with minimal formal instruction or corrective feedback. Seven major error types were identified: literal translation, lexical substitution, inappropriate contextual use, structural deformation, overgeneralization, idiom incompleteness, and collocational clash. These errors suggest a partial awareness of idiomatic meaning, but limited control over form, register, and structural fixedness. The study highlights the pedagogical need for more explicit idiom instruction, including contextual modeling, contrastive analysis, and genre sensitive practice, to help learners achieve greater fluency and stylistic precision in their academic writing
