Abstract
Mar’atus Sholehah. 2013: The Situation Types Analysis of the English Translation of Surah Al-Mulk By Dr. Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali and Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan. Key Words : Situation Types, Translation, Surah Al-Mulk. This research investigated the situation types as found in the translated surah Al-Mulk by Dr. Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali and Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan. Situation types is sentence level semantic system which enable speakers to organize descriptions of situations. There are many languages in this world, and not everyone understands all languages in this world. Translation may become solution in this problem. There are many texts was translated, one of them is the noble Qur‟an translated by them. Surah Al-Mulk was choosed as the object of this investigation. It is because this surah has complex situation types. Related on the background of the problem, the research purposes was used to answer three following questions. The first is “what is the translation strategy of surah Al-Mulk that translated by Dr. Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali and Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan?”. The second is “what kinds of situation types are found in the English translation of Surah Al-Mulk by Dr. Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali and Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan?”. Then, the third is “how does such use of situation types affect the new creation of surah Al-Mulk by Dr. Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali and Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan?”. This research was conducted using qualitative method in content analysis, because the data of this study are in the form of sentences and words of surah Al- Mulk. The steps of data collection are looking for English translation of surah Al- Mulk by them, reading and understanding them, categorizing Arabic and English clauses, coding data, categorizing Arabic and English situation types, and analyzing data. To analyze data, she presented data, interpreted the data, then drew the conclusion Based on the findings and discussions of the data, it can be concluded that Dr. Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali and Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan used a global strategy in their creation, there are 78 Arabic situation types and 115 English situation types were found in the English translation of surah Al-Mulk. The 78 Arabic situation types consist of 60 khabariyah or 77%, 10 ta‟diyah or 13%, 4 muthowa‟ah or 5%, 3 li at-taktsir or 4%, and 1 takalluf or 1% were found in the original text of surah Al-Mulk, this analysis be relevant with Asrori‟s theory. Then, there are 115 English situation types with 47 states or 41%, 41 activities or 36%, 19 accomplishments or 16%, 7 achievements or 6%, and 1 semelfactive or 1% were found in the English translation of surah Al-Mulk by them. Then, there is a big effect of situation types such used in their new creation, because the number of unstable situation types more than stable situation types. This research expected can be useful for all of readers, especially for learners and next researchers who are interested to make research in same field namely semantics in order to be better, more wonderful, and more complete in their analysis. ii
