Abstract

LIA SAGITA :THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’ UNDERSTANDING OF FUNCTION AND CONTENT WORDS AND THEIR COMPETENCE IN WRITING SIMPLE PARAGRAPH AT THE SECOND YEAR OF MTSN CIREBON II English as communication language learned by more of people in the world. It roles as sciences of language. Mastering English is an important condition for individual, so every nation learn English to make a go answering the period challenge at global level. Learning English requires an attention toward language skill, such as reading, writing, listening and speaking. The formulation of the problem in this thesis is divided into four parts namely, the identification of the problem, the limitation of the problem, the question of the research, and the aims of the research. In this case, the writer discusses about the students‟ understanding of function and content words and their competence in writing simple paragraph. The aims of the research in writing this thesis are as follows: to know the data of students understanding of function and content words, to know the data of students competence in writing simple paragraph, to know there is any positive and significant correlation between the students understanding of function and content words on their competence in writing simple paragraph. To know all of the data in this research, the writer has used quantitative approach. It means that the data which is obtained from the field of the research is then analyzed statistically by means of using the formulation of Pearson‟s correlation product moment. The average score of students‟ understanding off function and content words as X variable is 7.23. it means that the students‟ understanding of function and content words can be categorized as “ sufficient”. The average score of the students‟ competence in writing simple paragraph as Y variable is 7. It means that the students‟ competence in writing simple paragraph can be categorized is “enough”. The result of correlation is 0.57. it means that between X variable and Y variable there is sufficient correlation. In other words, there is positive correlation between the students‟ understanding of function and content words and their competence in writing simple paragraph.
