Abstract

Since 2004, Indonesia has undergone four curriculum changes. However, data shows a sharp Since 2004, Indonesia has undergone four curriculum changes. However, data shows a sharp decline in the English Language Proficiency Index (EPI) over the past 11 years, which is also followed by a decline in literacy, numeracy and science indices according to PISA, PIRLS and TIMSS versions. According to the literature, this decline is due to the use of outdated ELT pedagogy. Therefore, this study aims to develop a digital learning resource with an innovative approach for grade 8 students, in the form of Gunung Jati's folklore that is close to students' lives in Cirebon. These stories are curated based on their respective CEFR levels, using differentiated learning and student-centered approaches. To facilitate critical and reflective thinking, the researcher used emotion reading as a learning tool. The study adopted a qualitative approach, mainly R&D (Research and Development) methodology. The research findings show that the use of digital media in teaching narrative text is considered practical and interesting, and encourages students' enthusiasm for learning. However, despite its proven benefits, teachers are still hesitant to adopt this new approach and prefer traditional teaching methods. Meanwhile, students are increasingly interested in exploring new and innovative ways of learning beyond traditional classroom practices. Overall, the importance of implementing innovative learning strategies to improve the quality of education in Indonesia must be supported by the provision of adequate facilities in schools as well as the optimism of teachers to try new things in the learning process to succeed. By incorporating new and diverse approaches in teaching and learning, educators can provide students with better knowledge, skills and competencies to face an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
