Abstract
Despite years of English education, a surprising number of students in Indonesia still grapple with a crippling lack of confidence when it comes to speaking the language. The purpose of this study was focused on investigate the effectiveness of the Speak Pal application on the speaking skills of tenth grade students at SMK Islamic Center Cirebon. The research approach used is quantitative approach, while the method used is pre-experimental with pre-test and post-test design, the study involved a single group of student to determine the impact of the Speak Pal app on their speaking skills. The population of this research consisted of 3 classes of tenth grade, with 22 to 30 students for each class and the samples of this study were tenth grade AKL 2, where the total of students was 22 students. The instrument used is test, while the data are collected by giving the per-test and post-test. First, students underwent a pretest to measure their initial speaking ability. After that, treatment was carried out using the Speak Pal application, and the last step was to conduct a posttest to measure students' speaking ability to be compared with the posttest. The data is analyzed using statistical of program SPSS 26. The pre-test results showed an average score of 46.55, which highlighted the lack of speaking skills among the students. After three treatment sessions with Speak Pal app, the post-test average score increased to 73.09, which showed a significant improvement in their speaking skills. The Speak Pal application provides a new dimension in English language learning. One of the main advantages of this application is its ability to increase students' confidence in speaking. By interacting directly with native and non-native speakers of English from various parts of the world, students are not only invited to practice speaking, but also overcome fear or awkwardness when speaking English. The experience of speaking with a real partner makes students feel more comfortable and confident, in other word, the learning process becomes more involved and interactive.
