Abstract
The Indonesian education system is in risk, particularly regarding English proficiency. Data from the English Proficiency Index (EPI) show a constant fall from 2018 to 2022, with Indonesia ranking 81st out of 111 nations in 2022. likewise, the PISA data show poor literacy rates. Uninteresting teaching approaches are mentioned as a factor. Many researches show that digital storytelling could improve and help students learn. Moreover, using illustration in digital storytelling could help to engage students’ attention. Therefore, the research is objective to investigate whether the use Digital Illustrated Folklore significantly affects students’ reading comprehension and to describe the students’ and teacher’s perspectives. Using a mixed-methods approach, pre- experimental design was used, with pre-tests and post-tests examined numerically using SPSS and qualitative data from interviews and questionnaires. The findings revealed an increase from the pre-test mean score of 40.29 to 84.00 in the post-test mean score. The p-value is lower than the significance level (0.001 < 0.05). Moreover, the N-Gain test result was 73% which was categorized as high. It can be concluded that the use of Digital Illustrated Folklore significantly affects students' reading comprehesion. Digital Illustrated Folklore created an enjoyable and engaging environment in learning process. Students expressed enthusiasm, entertainede, and interested in the lessons. This strategy has various benefits, including increasing student interest, encourage students’ reading comprehension, fostering creativity, simplifying learning material, and encouraging independent learning. The study intends to help students improve their reading comprehension while also making learning more entertaining and effective.
