Abstract

This research focuses on the learning processes and strategies of EFL learners in the context of becoming English masters of ceremony. Public speaking skills are the main measurement for becoming an English master of ceremony. It was found that EFL learners have difficulty mastering speaking skills because English is a second language for those who have different linguistic backgrounds. Therefore, this research is needed because previous researchers only studied strategies applied in academic or formal contexts without examining how learners explore the processes and strategies they use to overcome these difficulties and become English masters of ceremony. This study aims to identify the learning steps or stages undergone by EFL learners in developing public speaking skills as English Masters of Ceremonies. In addition, this research also analyzes the contribution of social practices in their learning and self-development processes. This research employs a qualitative case study design with an exploratory approach. Research data were collected through in-depth interviews with EFL learners who had experience as English masters of ceremony. To complement and validate the data, document analysis was conducted on the masters of ceremony’s competency scores. The results of this study are the journey toward mastery in the role of English MC among EFL learners is influenced by individual preparation and active practice, as well as the contribution of community practices ranging from training resources and feedback to motivational support, which play a role in improving skill development and personal growth in this specific area of public speaking as masters of ceremony.
