Abstract
This study is based on the increasing challenges in teaching English writing in the 21st century, particularly students' difficulties in developing ideas, mastering grammar, and producing authentic writing, which are further complicated by technological advances and the emergence of AI tools. Despite the implementation of a student-centered approach, students still experience limitations in idea organization, vocabulary, and self-confidence, while teachers face challenges in technology integration and assessment of writing authenticity. Therefore, this study aims to (1. explore the use of a deep learning approach in supporting students' writing skills, 2. investigate the experiences and perceptions of teachers and students, and 3. examine the challenges and opportunities in its implementation). This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews involving one English teacher and two XI grade students, as well as observations in two XI grade classes and one X grade class. The findings indicate that the deep learning approach supports writing skills through meaningful, mindful, and joyful learning with the integration of technology, real-world contexts, and hands-on practice, and increases engagement, confidence, and collaboration. However, challenges remain, such as the difficulty of assessing writing authenticity due to the use of AI, limited time for reflection and feedback, students' linguistic barriers, and teachers' readiness to adapt. On the other hand, opportunities arise through the use of digital technology, the use of real-life contexts for idea development, and practice-based learning that fosters continuous development. This study contributes by providing empirical insights and pedagogical implications for creating more adaptive, student-centered, and meaningful writing instruction in the digital age.
