Abstract

Scientific literacy is an important skill that students need to have in science learning because it is related to the ability to understand scientific concepts, analyze phenomena, and use scientific knowledge to solve problems in everyday life. However, students' scientific literacy are still relatively low because classroom learning tends to focus on delivering material and does not relate concepts to real-world problems. One effort that can be made to improve students' scientific literacy is to apply the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model combined with the Socio Scientific Issue (SSI) approach. This study aims to determine the effect of applying the SSI-based PBL learning model on improving students' scientific literacy in human circulation system material. This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. Data were obtained through scientific literacy tests in the form of pretests and posttests, which were then analyzed using N-gain calculations. The results showed that the increase in students' scientific literacy in the experimental class was higher than that in the control class. This was indicated by the average N-gain score of the experimental class of 0.51, which was in the moderate category, while the control class obtained an average N-gain score of 0.36, which was also in the moderate category but lower than that of the experimental class. Thus, it can be concluded that the application of the SSI-based PBL learning model can be used as an alternative to improve students' scientific literacy
