Abstract

Module is one of the tools to learn speaking in tertiary education. Yet, the quality of the current module is still not adequate to stimulate students to have good speaking proficiency. Meanwhile, speaking is an extremely important and necessary skill in the 21st century. Students are also required to have various skills that is able to help them in confronting the variety of challenges in the 21st century. This research aims to reveal the characteristics of speaking module needed by English Language Department students in the 21st century, the components of speaking module in the 21st century, and the speaking-module that is able to meet the needs of students in preparing their communication skills in the workplace. The design used in this research is research and development, by adapting the ADDIE model in designing the module. In addition, the techniques applied to collect the data are critical literature review, semi-structured interview, and document analysis. The results of the research are the characteristics of module, the components of module in the 21st module, and the speaking module which contains nine learning units packaged in the context of everyday working life. This learning module is expected to be a supporting tool for students to prepare communication skills in the workplace. Besides, the result of expert validation showed that the feasibility level of the module is 94.6% with some notes from the expert to maximize the quality of this module. Thus, this speaking module is very feasible to be implemented as the learning material to teach speaking in the workplaces course.
