Abstract

In this research problem highlights the lack of confidence and feeling embarrassed in Speaking English. This study aims to find out the results of students’ speaking skills before and after using Spying method, to find out the results of students’ Speaking skills before and after using Spying method, and to determine whether there is any significant effect between the using Spying and Show and Tell Method on students' Speaking skills. This research method was quantitative method and the design used in this study was a quasi-experimental design. In collecting the data, the populationfor this study comprised eight-grade students’ of SMP Negeri 2 Plered Cirebon in the 2023/2024 academic year. The samples of this studywere 30 students’ of class VIII D as the experimental class and 30 students’ of class VIII E as the control class. The instrument used to collect the data were pre-test and posttest. The data was analyzed by using SPSS 25. The research findings show that the average value of the experiment class pre-test was 65.68and the post-test was 78.00. There increasing score from the pre-test and post-test was 12.32. There was an increase in value from the pre-test to the post-test in experiment class. In other words, there was significant difference between the mean of pre-test and post-test scores the experimental class. The findings show that sig(2-tailed) value was 0.000. which was less than the specified significance value of 0.05. The null hypothesis (Ho) was found to be statistically significant and hence rejected, whereas the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was deemed to be supported by the data and accepted. This implies that Spying method on the students’ speaking skills on narrative text is very effective. The results of this research can be used to develop and strategies for teaching students to speak English more effectively and interactively by utilizing the potential of the Spying method to improve students' speaking skills.
