Abstract
In the 21st century, assessment regarded as something dynamic for EFL learners. A variety of factors should be considered by the teacher as assessors. This research specifically focuses on characteristics of 21st century assessment and the needs of speaking assessment in 21st century. Speaking assessment has been widely known that it used to measure the learners abilities to speak fluently. This research aims to explore the characteristics of assessment for EFL learners and to ensure whether the assessment is compatible with the needs of speaking assessment in 21st century. The methodology which used in this research is qualitative approach and using a critical literature review to answer the entire research question. The sources of data were taken from several journals, books, articles, thesis, websites, etc. The findings of this research show that there are eleven characteristics of 21st century assessment and following the needs of speaking assessment.
