Abstract

This study reports on the effectiveness of an innovative approach to teaching writing in junior high school in Cirebon by integrating photobook media for creating recount texts. The use of photobook media aims to enhance students' writing skills and increase their motivation to write. The research adopted a mixed-method sequential explanatory strategy (quantitative-qualitative). The subjects were eighth-grade students at MTs Negeri 11 Cirebon. Data were collected using tests, questionnaires, and interviews. The research employed a preexperimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test for the quantitative approach. Students' writing errors were categorized according to the assessment rubric by Jacobs et al. (1981). Data analysis was conducted using the Shapiro- Wilk test with SPSS 25.0, assessing normality and homogeneity. Questionnaires were analyzed by calculating percentages, and interview data were processed through data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion or verification. The study revealed that the mean pre-test score of students was 64.47, while the mean post-test score was 84.47. A paired sample t-test showed a significance level (2-tailed) of 0.000, indicating that H1 was accepted since the significance value was less than 0.05. The most notable improvement was in language use, suggesting that students expressed their ideas more clearly and effectively in writing after using photobooks. Both students and teachers responded positively to the use of photobooks, as reflected in the questionnaire and interview data. In conclusion, the integration of photobooks as a teaching and learning medium significantly enhances students' recount writing skills and can be considered a viable alternative for teaching writing.
