Abstract
Reading can be done with a variety of interesting techniques and strategies. Using the learning strategy in reading comprehension make the learning process more efficient, effective, and attract learners interest while increasing learners creativity. But, learners keep struggling with reading comprehension issues, so the learners have learnt with a good reading strategy and know the needs in reading skills. The aims of this research to investigate the strategies and EFL learners of Junior High School needs in reading comprehension skills in the 21st century. This research was conducted using the qualitative research method. The researcher utilizes critical literature review and interviews to collect the data. The participants in this research were eight learners of IX grade and one English teacher. The result of this research described the strategies of reading comprehension among others: summarizing, graphic & semantic organizers, cooperative learning, answering and generating question, understanding story structure, identifying the main ideas, using visual aids, inferences, intertextuality, and elaborate based on experience. Then the EFL Junior High School needs are reading is constructive, skilled reading is fluent, skilled reading is strategic, reading requires motivation, reading is a lifelong pursuit, goal oriented, monitor their understanding, and actively engaged.
