Abstract

In the 21st century, online learning has become an important component in the learning process. Online learning develops a professional with improved critical thinking and helping students to learn and be creative. Online learning resources build students are more responsible for their own learning. One of the aspects that determine the success of learning is strategies used. Nowadays, students are not aware of the learning strategies. They tend to be completely dependent on their teachers in the learning process. To be a good reader, students should be capable to select the suitable reading strategies. However, Indonesian students especially in Cirebon are not familiar with reading strategies as they rely on their teachers especially during online learning. It is important to analyze EFL learners’ reading strategy during online learning in the 21st century and the researcher also describes about students’ difficulties while using online reading sources. The aims of the research were to find out students’ reading strategies can be used for online learning in the 21st century and to find out the difficulties that faced by students while using online reading sources in the 21st century. This research was used qualitative descriptive approach. The writer used qualitative descriptive method in order to have better understanding about the topic of the research. The subject in this research was eleven grade of senior high school level. The data was collected through interviews and questionnaire using Google Form in the conduct of this study. The result of this research indicated there were three online reading strategies such as global reading strategy, problem-solving strategy, and support strategy. The most frequent was global reading strategy, the second was problem-solving reading strategy, and the least was support strategy. In the other hand, the difficulties that faced by students were the lack of vocabulary mastery, the lack of search the relevant material and eye factor.
