Abstract

The online learning process is not always easy for students and teachers many problems and obstacles appear in the online learning process, especially in English online learning. This research talks about students‘ needs of effective English online learning in the 21st Century, especially at senior high school level. The aims of research to determine what are needs and characteristics and principles for effective English online learning in the 21st Century. This research uses qualitative research and critical literature review. Data collected from the study literature by critical literature review. Besides, data collected also from teacher and students‘ interviews in senior high school and Islamic high school. As a result, the researcher found some principles that can be applied for effective English online learning. The researcher found that, addressed from the teachers‘ and student‘s perspective, they claimed students had supporting devices, supporting media and materials, and internal and external support of needs in effective English online learning. The conclusion of this research is that any categories of principles and characteristics of effective English online learning which are related to the support of the students‘ needs of effective English online learning in the realisation condition.
